Legal Entity Identifier

Definition

A 20-character alphanumeric code (ISO 17442) that uniquely identifies a legal entity, issued through the Global LEI System overseen by GLEIF, with a public record of who the entity is and who owns it.

How we use the term

A core function of the firm, and more so as Canada moves toward the vLEI standard. GLEIF holds the root of trust; Qualified vLEI Issuers issue the organization's credential; Official Organization Role and Engagement Context Role credentials name the people who act for it, which maps onto the roles the Record already models. The vLEI is its verifiable credential form, letting an organization and the people who act for it prove identity to machines; the anchor identity engineering points a business at as the standard spreads.
