Definition
Search that answers a query by composing a response from retrieved sources, with citations, instead of returning a ranked list of pages: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Copilot's answers in Bing, and the assistants that search the web before replying.
How we use the term
A prompt fans out into sub-queries; the results are checked against each other and entities and claims are extracted. A fact buried in unstructured text does not reach the answer.
