This is the long-awaited Semantic Web: the web with an added intelligence layer for machines to not just read, but reason about. These systems are looking for your structured semantic layer by which to understand your business. It ignores your marketing language and your keywords.
As organic search results plummet, AI recommendations are rising. Winning the recommendation is about having a structured map of your business; it's verified identity, products and services, industries, certifications, awards and proofs clearly articulated. The signal: AI visibility is now measurable
This month at its Build conference, Microsoft launched Web IQ, a search engine built for AI rather than people. It is the layer that decides which sources an AI system trusts before it answers, and its already driving decisions and business recommendations for Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and enterprise systems at companies like Nasdaq.[1]
Within the same few weeks, both Microsoft and Google handed businesses something they never had: a way to see themselves inside AI answers. Bing's webmaster tools now report the topics you are cited for and a Citation Share, the portion of AI answers your business earns.[2]
Days later, on June 3, Google added generative AI performance reports to Search Console, showing whether your pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.[3] AI visibility is now first-party data on both platforms.
The convergence is the point. When the platforms grounding most of the world's AI search start handing you instruments to measure your place in it, the stakes have become real. AI discovery is a scoreboard now, and by McKinsey's count only about one brand in six systematically tracks how it performs there.[4] But a scoreboard only tells you the score. The game is played on a different surface.
The arena: the Semantic Web, and what it rewards
To know what the scoreboard rewards, start with the web it reads. Microsoft's engineers describe Web IQ as semantic-first: it reads content by meaning first and treats exact keywords as a backstop, kept only for cases where precise spelling matters, like a product code or a name.[5]
That is the Semantic Web Tim Berners-Lee named more than twenty years ago. The World Wide Web rebuilt as connected facts a machine can read, cross-check, and reason about, rather than pages people skim. For a business, this is the structured layer where your identity, what you do, what you are qualified to do, whom you serve, and what you have proven, exists as information AI can resolve and trust. This sits in stark contrast to most websites today - full of claims and marketing prose that's up for interpretation.
For most of those twenty years it was theory. AI grounding systems have made it the operational layer AI reads before it answers.
Two things now matter there more than keywords: being a distinct, clearly defined business, and being the best, most provable answer to the questions your customers ask. Both are entity or knowledge architecture, your business declared as a verified record a machine can read, with the relationships between its parts made explicit. Where most businesses have marketing copy on a website, Huckleberry Way installs a deep, traversable map of verified, provable facts and information AI can read and reason about.
Microsoft makes the point for us. Its engineers name entity specificity, how distinct a business is as itself, as something the system must preserve, and warn that when it is missing, everything downstream can only partly compensate, at added cost.[5] In plain terms, a blurry business cannot be rescued by clever wording later. Distinctiveness has to be built into the structure.
Where so much of this runs: Google
Most of our clients live or die on Google, and that is exactly where the new scoreboards point. Google's report measures whether you surface in AI Overviews and AI Mode, the features now answering a large and growing share of searches. But notice what it does, and does not, do. It tells you whether you appear. It does not tell you how to get there, and it shows impressions, not even the clicks behind them. The same is true of Bing. Both dashboards measure a record you build somewhere else.
You can see that most clearly from the Bing side. Bing gives a business almost nothing to fill in directly, essentially a place listing and an offer, yet it can report what you are cited for in AI answers. The only way it can do that is by reading the structured information you publish, the citations you have earned across the web, and, almost certainly, your Google Business Profile -the de facto identity utility used by search engines everywhere. The dashboard is a mirror; the record is what it reflects.
For a Google-centred business, that record runs through Google's own machinery: your Business Profile, the Knowledge Graph behind your Knowledge Panel, and the structured information on your site that AI Overviews and AI Mode read. It is also the path Google itself keeps describing: lead with what only you can say, structure your site so systems and agents can read it, and keep your Business Profile accurate.[6] That is entity architecture in Google's own words. About half of buyers now use AI search to decide who to buy from,[4] and the same research finds a brand's own channels are only five to ten percent of what AI draws on; the rest is the wider web of structured information and citations. In B2B the effect is already sharp: G2 found that 69% of software buyers chose a different vendor than they had planned on the strength of an AI recommendation, and a third bought from one they had never heard of.[7]
The businesses AI names are the ones whose identity and claims it can verify.
So the question is simple. When AI reads the Semantic Web, can it find you, verify you, and reason about you well enough to recommend you with confidence? If your presence is marketing copy, AI is guessing. If it is entity architecture, AI is reasoning.
