The Challenge: A Mandate for Excellence
When Toyota, one of the world's most revered manufacturers, prepared to launch its state-of-the-art, multi-billion-dollar battery plant in North Carolina, they faced a monumental challenge: How do you onboard 12,000 new employees in the first year into a high-tech environment while instilling a culture of safety that is second to none? The onboarding had to match the innovation of the facility itself, performing flawlessly at an immense scale from day one.
Toyota's vision for a tactile, immersive learning experience was unprecedented. No off-the-shelf hardware or software platform existed that could meet the project's complex demands.
Our first task, therefore, was not simply to create content, but to architect and engineer an entirely new, industrial-grade hardware and software experience platform from the ground up.
We delivered an integrated system of commercial-grade touch monitors, custom-configured PCs powerful enough to run demanding real-time 3D Unity applications, and a suite of companion iPads and mixed-reality devices.
The entire ecosystem—from the 64" touch monitors to the iPads and MR apps—had to function as a single, cohesive, and centrally managed system with flawless remote reliability and industrial grade resilience.
The system we built was so intuitive and robust that it successfully guided 12,000 new employees through their onboarding safety journey in the first year alone.
The core of the experience was a series of four real-time 3D game world applications, built in the Unity game engine. These rich learning experiences were delivered on 64" touch monitors where employees could explore, learn, and retain information through real-time interactivity and physical touch.
To guide employees on their journey, we created an engaging 3D guide. He became the friendly, irresistible face of the entire safety program, tailored specifically to the Toyota brand and now deployed across North American manufacturing sites both digitally and in print.
We extended the experience across the facility with tools including a premium training app for knowledge retention, an interactive Augmented Reality (AR) experience to bridge the digital and physical worlds, welcome videos and more reinforcing the culture of safety at every touchpoint.
Being the chosen communications partner for a company like Maple Leaf Foods through a decade of intense change proves our unique ability to operate at the highest levels of strategy and trust.
